Start with a basic buttercream icing made of butter powdered sugar heavy cream and vanilla. Add 3 tablespoons whole milk and beat until smooth.

Fold the color into the frosting until incorporated.

To make black food coloring add equal parts of red blue and green food coloring to your recipe.

If the icing is bitter because of the dye try adding cocoa or carob powder to mask the flavor.

Add black cocoa and powdered sugar and begin to mix.
